Six generations of Oakmarsh Chesapeakes

Established 2006

I am a KC Assured Breeder, with over 20 years experience with Chesapeakes, working, showing and doing many other activities with them.

Our puppies are reared with the utmost love, care and attention, and plenty of fresh air and outside stimulation, to prepare them for the big outside world!

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are renowned for their exceptional versatility and loyalty, making them outstanding companions for various lifestyles. Their origin as waterfowl retrievers in the challenging conditions of the Chesapeake Bay has endowed them with remarkable endurance, strength, and intelligence. These dogs are not only skilled hunters but also excel in obedience, agility, and various canine sports. Their hardworking nature and keen problem-solving abilities make them a favorite among dog enthusiasts who appreciate a breed capable of both vigorous activity and attentive companionship.

In addition to their physical prowess, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are known for their distinctive personalities. They are fiercely loyal to their families, often forming deep bonds with their owners and displaying a protective instinct that makes them excellent watchdogs. Their independence and confidence can sometimes come across as stubbornness, but this trait also means they are determined and capable workers. Despite their robust and sometimes serious demeanor, they are affectionate and enjoy participating in family activities, showcasing a gentle side that endears them to children and adults alike.

Gundog

Tia (Oakmarsh Acorn) retrieving a pheasant.
Originally bred as a wildfowling dog, the Chesapeake will retrieve a variety of game species.

Showdog

Fennel (Oakmarsh Chestnut), 1st in her Class at both Crufts 2017 and Crufts 2010.
The Chesapeake is one of only a few breeds that stay true to their working purpose, yet the same dogs can also be shown, rather than the work/show split in breeds like Labradors. Truly form meets function.

Scootering

Chessies love to run! What better way to keep them fit than to train them to run / bike / scooter with you .
